Was Anvil The First Thrash Metal Band?

Way back a long time ago, before Anvil was best known for a movie made about them: Anvil was in a tremendously influential, “proto-thrash” band. Musicians like Lemmy, Slash, Scott Ian and Lars Ulich considered them to be a big influence. While Anvil’s sound was more of traditional heavy metal, they did play louder and faster than most bands did at the time.

Listen and Decide, If You Haven’t Heard Anvil (You Probably Haven’t).

Mastodon – Crack the Skye – Was This Mastodon’s Classic Album Or Can The Top It?

mastodon blood mountain era band photo

Crack the Skye is the fourth studio Atlanta prog-metal band Mastodon. It is both their highest best album to date and held in the highest regard by critics and fans.

Since Mastodon put out several subsequent albums. Crack the Skye (as of this blog post) is now 10 years old. Their follow up follow-up efforts have all been good, but no Crack The Skye.

Was “Crack the Skye” Mastodon’s High-Water Mark Or Can They Top It?

My question to you is: is this their Reign In Blood, or do they have a better one in them?

Rare Vinyl Kreator ‎Pleasure To Kill 1986

Pleasure to Kill is the second studio album by German thrash metal band Kreator, released in April 1986 by Noise Records. Pleasure to Kill is widely considered a thrash metal classic, as well as a landmark album in the history of thrash metal along with Master of Puppets by Metallica, Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying? By Megadeth, Reign in Blood by Slayer, Eternal Devastation by Destruction and Darkness Descends by Dark Angel, all released in 1986.

The album played a considerable role in the development of many extreme metal subgenres, and many death metal bands cite the record as an influence. The lyrical themes follow those found on their first album Endless Pain, containing descriptions of horrible scenes of death and horror. (Source: Wikipeadia)

Possessed (Bay Area Thrash / Death Metal Band) Classic Album – Seven Churches

POSSESSED 1985 - POSSESSED LINE-UP

Everything You Wanted To Know About The Band Possessed, but Were Afraid To Ask!

Possessed is a thrash/death metal band formed in 1983 in San Fransico. They are widely credited with inventing the term “Death Metal”. The band’s classic album is “Seven Churches” came out in 1985. Their subsequent albums, “Eyes Of Horror” and “Beyond The Gatesare also quite good.

Some Interesting Possessessed Facts:

Rather than regurgitating info on their Wikipedia page, here are some interesting facts you probably don’t know:

  • Metal Blade Records passed on Possessed (even they appeared on Metal Massacre). Combat Records would later sign the band.
  • Guitarist Larry Lalonde (who played on all three albums) went on to be the guitarist for Primus. Larry met Les Claypool in Blind Illusion, not long after Primus was formed.
  • Possessed is credited by many for coining the term death metal, which is a song on 7 Churches.
  • Jeff Becerra’s guttural vocal style is considered the first “death metal vocals” – which would later become a staple for bands like Obituary.
  • The “Eyes Of Horror” LP was produced by guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani.
  • Singer Jeff Becerra was shot in a robbery in 1989 and paralyzed for life.
  • Jeff Becerra still performs under the name “Possessed” as the sole original member. On stage, he sings in a wheelchair.
  • Larry Lalonde has been a staunch vegetarian since 1983.
