What Happened To Hirax?

aton W. De Pena and james hetfield

Hirax, Katon W. De Pena, Raging Violence and Beyond

Raging Violence was the first official Hirax album, Metal Blade, which appeared with their first full-length in 1985. Hirax was Katon W. De Pena (vocals), Scott Owen (guitar), Gary Monardo (bass), and John Tabares (drums).

In 1986, John Tabares left the band and was replaced by Eric Brecht (D.R.I’s vocalist Kurt Brecht’s brother). After that, they released a second LP, “Hate, Fear, and Power” (16 minutes / eight tunes). Later, the band released the live album “Blasted In Bangkok” in 1987.

Be that as it may, with strains and frustrations in the band, De Pena chose to leave and form another group with Gene Hoglan (former Dark Angel drummer), and Ron McGovney (former Metallica bassist). They called themselves Phantasm. After a brief tour with Nuclear Assault, they separated. In 1989, after De Pena left Phantasm, the substitution was Paul Baloff (former Exodus frontman), not long after the band split.

The band “reformed” in 2013 with Katon W. De Pena, the only original member, and continues to record and tour to this day

Whiplash (Underrated Trash Metal Band From New York) – Classic Album “Power And Pain” 1986

whiplash thrash band from the 80s - old school

Everything You Wanted To Know About Whiplash But Were Afraid To Ask….

Whiplash was for sure one of those metal bands that should have been bigger. Instead, the band still plays shows from time to time.

  • All three members of the classic lineup were named “Tony.”
  • Drummer Tony Scaglione was in Slayer briefly. If you blinked, you might have missed it. He didn’t record with the band.
  • Bassist Tony Bono died at 38 years old due to a heart attack.
  • Peter Steele from Carnivore / Type O Negative did backing vocals on this album.
  • Singer/guitarist Tony Portaro can read music (not just tablature)

Agent Steel LP – Unstoppable Force LP (1986)

AGENT STEEL BAND IN THE 1980S

Unstoppable Force is the second album from the US speed metal band Agent Steel. It was recorded at Morrisound Recording Studios in Tampa, Florida, in March 1986.

Combat Records released the album in March 1987. The 1999 reissue by Century Media Records is a compilation of the Mad Locust Rising EP. Some later reissues exclude the cover version of the Judas Priest song “The Ripper”. Unstoppable Force was the last album before the band split up in 1988, only to reform in 1998 without John Cyriis and his consent for the release of the 1999 album Omega Conspiracy. TOP 50 THRASH METAL ALBUMS OF 1988

DEATHWHISH DEMON PRECHER 1988

The era of conquerors part 3.

Third year into “the era of conquerors” and if I had to choose a title to describe this year, it would definately be “…And injustice for all”! And I’m not kidding. Apparently this is the year with the greatest injustices. Carrier of some of the most overated and the most underated thrash records of all times. Seems like the music bussiness has finally caught up with the thrash metal domain and pours it’s poisonous judgement, bloodied by profit upon our favorite music. But here we are 30 years later to set things straight. Punish some for the extreme attention they got and highlight others that never got what they deserved. Musicaly the year was extremely diverse. Amazing efforts were made, mainly from Europe and north America. There are the exceptions of two Australian and one Chilean albums in this list though. Complexity and technical supremacy are two very common traits that characterize the whole year. If nothing else, 1988 was quite controversial and intriguing. And as such I had a very difficult time trying to classify all this magnificence. But here it is at last. The answers to the years secrets lies beyond this prelude. Enter this musical labyrinth and explore by yourselves the way forward. Enjoy, notify, spread, comment this wonderfull music. Thrash till death!
