MOST EXPENSIVE METAL CDS 2023

It’s been a while since I’ve blog-updated one of these lists of the most expensive metal CDs I have acquired when buying black and death metal CD collections. What follows is a list of the most expensive CDs we have sold in the first two quarters of 2023 above $79.

3) Enslaved – Vikingligr Veldi CD

Enslaved – Vikingligr Veldi CD 1994 Deathlike Silence – Anti Mosh 008 [EARLY] – The first press from this Norwegian death metal band has no white space on the back cover, which is about the same size as a bar code. The subsequent repress has this. Regardless of which version you have, they are both worth a ton. Enslaved is still active, tours, and is releasing new material.

Price $149.95

2) Dawn – Nær Solen Gar Niþer For Evogher CD

Dawn – Nær Solen Gar Niþer For Evogher CD 1994 Necropolis – NR 006 ORIGINAL – All of the 90s albums, Sweedish melodic-death metal band Dawn, are extremely expensive. Even the reissues cost quite a bit and sell out immediately. If you have never listened to Dawn, I highly recommend you do.

Price $159.95

1) Weakling – Dead As Dreams CD

Weakling – Dead As Dreams CD 2000 tUMULt – tm 17 – American Black Metallers Weakling released only one studio album besides a rehearsal recording. Weakling became quite popular posthumously due to their early 2000s breakup. This CD is a cult classic and is damn near impossible to find.

7. Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II LP

Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II LP 1982 Mobile Fidelity Sound – MFSL 1-065 VG+/EX – This LP has a Discogs Median of $300, which is more or less right. An Awesome Collection of Heavy Metal, Classic & Hard Rock Vinyl I Scored In Orange County, CA

An Awesome Collection of Heavy Metal, Classic & Hard Rock Vinyl I Scored In Orange Count

Below are some highlights from an incredible collection of metal, hard rock, hardcore punk, and classic rock vinyl I just bought from a collector in Los Angeles.

Unlike many collections I have been buying recently from collectors living out of state or even out of the country, I picked this one up locally from a lawyer moving out of town. He found my ad on the Internet and contacted me. I drove down to Orange County from Los Angels and quickly appraised the collection; we agreed on a price, I sent him a Paypal, and I left with the collection that night.

In addition to the vinyl in the video, his collection included:

  • Over 1500 CDs.
  • Some great framed show flyers.
  • Some other great memorabilia from the Canyon Club in LA.

I completed the deal in just a few hours which sure beats driving to another state or negotiating an international deal with France.

Vinyl Highlights

Here are some of the highlights and rare albums it included:

Motörhead – Another Perfect Day LP 1983 Bronze 811 365-1 M-1 [FULLY SIGNED] VG+ – The album is a gold-stamped promo and very rare autographed copy – signed by all three musicians that played on it (Lemmy, Phil, and Bryan). Autographed at the Canyon Club outside of Los Angeles around 1984 by this lineup that was only together for one album, two members are sadly no longer with us.

VG+/VG+
Value: 300$

Metallica – Master Of Puppets LP 1986 Elektra 9 60439-1 VG+/EX [RARE WL PROMO] – Very rare white-label promo with a hilarious hype sticker that reads, “THE ONLY TRACK YOU PROBABLY WON’T PLAY IS “DAMAGE, INC.” DUE TO MULTIPLE USES OF THE INFAMOUS “F” WORD. OTHERWISE, THERE AREN’T ANY “SHITS”, “FUCKS”, “PISSES”, “CUNTS”, “MUTHERFUCKERS” OR “COCKSUCKERS” ANYWHERE ON THE RECORD.” This sticker is more evidence of how much times have changed since 1986.

VG+/EX
Value: 200$

Guns N’ Roses – Appetite For Destruction LP 1987 Geffen – GHS 24148 VG+/VG+ – The original uncensored Robert Williams cover of “Appetite For Destruction” later changed to the more known version of the artwork.

VG+/VG+
Value: 200$

Cro-Mags – The Age Of Quarrel LP 1986 Profile Records – PRO-1218 VG+/VG+ – A hardcore classic, the original release on Profile Records is unusual, considering Profile Records is mainly known for hip-hop.

VG+/VG+
Value: 200$

Megadeth – Killing Is My Business & Business Is Good! LP 1985 Combat MX 8015 VG+ – The album is the first pressing with the dark green label. For all albums on Combat Records, the first press is the dark green labels, and the second is the camouflage label, although both were often released in the same year.

VG+/VG+
Value: 179$

Slayer ‎– Show No Mercy LP 1984 Metal Blade ‎– MBR 1013 VG+/VG+ w/ Insert – The record is the second pressing of “Show No Mercy” with the silver label and was issued the same year as the first. The first pressing has the tan labels and is worth almost twice what this copy is worth, even though they both came out in 1984.

VG+/VG+
Value: 179$

There were also many outstanding classic rock records in this collection from bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and the Roling Stones that I did not include in the video because this is a heavy metal-themed blog.

Collection of Rare 90s Death Metal LPs, 7″ Singles & EPs I Scored

rare 90s death metal singles

The video above is a walk-thru of some rare golden-age of death metal LPs, EPs, and singles I picked up in a by-mail transaction from a collector in Texas. This purchase is a small collection of 18 records in total. However, some of these are rare and expensive. I will highlight the top gems below.

Impaled Nazarene – Ugra – Karma 1993 Osmose Productions – OPLP 018 – This copy is the rare first cover artwork lifted from Madame Koslovsky’s “Mother Durga riding on her tiger carrier offers prayers to Lord Vishnu”. The artist sued Impaled Nazarene and Osmose Productions for using this art without permission and had to settle out of court, making these first pressings extremely rare and expensive.

Value: 300-400$ average (according to Discogs).

Demigod / Necropsy – Unholy Domain / Necropsy 1992 Seraphic Decay Records – SCAM 028 – This split LP is a compilation of exclusive tracks from Necropsy and a previously unreleased demo from Demigod. It is rarer than a coherent thought from Joe Biden.

Value: 200-400$ average

Master’s Hammer – Klavierstück 7″ EP 1991 Poserslaughter – PSR 004 [Green] *DE – Master’s Hammer is a weird band with a sound that is not easy to define. Unfortunately, limited pressings of this colored vinyl are not cheap either.

Value: 100$ average

Immortal Fate – Faceless Burial 7″ EP 1992 Drowned Productions DS-002 VG+ Spain – This rare gem from the short-lived Immoral Fate is quite sought after by collectors and henceforth not cheap.

Value: 100$ average

Vomitory – Moribund 7″ Single 1993 Witchhunt Records – 9309 VG+/VG+ [Sweden] – This 7″ was the first music the world would hear from the still-active Vomitory and is not cheap.

Value: 80$ average

Wombbath – Several Shapes 7″ EP 1992 Infest Records – THIN 001 [France] VG+/VG+ – This EP is only one of three of Wombbath’s 90s recordings before taking over 20 years off and returning to active status in 2015.

Value: 80$ average

Monstrosity – Burden Of Evil 7″ Single 1991 Relapse Records – RR-011 VG+/VG+ – Not the most expensive compared to other early Monstrosity vinyl, but featured because you can see George Corpsegrinder’s neck was already like a treetrunk even at the tender age of 19!

Value: 80$ average

Sinister – Putrefying Remains 7″ EP 1990 Witchhunt Records WIHU 9103 VG+/VG+ *SW – I included this EP because I was surprised at how not expensive it is. Released in 1990, even before the infamous Cross The Styx album, I’m shocked it’s not worth more.

Value: 50$ average

Highlights From An Extremely Rare Black Metal Vinyl Collection I Bought From France

BUYING BLACK FRENCH METAL COLLECTIONS HEADER

I just bought a crazy black metal collection from France with numerous “Holy Grail” records that collectors dream about owning and some of the most expensive pieces I’ve ever acquired. Starting in late 2022, I’d been talking to a French black metal musician (who shall remain unnamed) about acquiring his black metal records and CDs. It took a few months to work out the deal. Next, I appraised and made an offer on the collection based on a series of photos sent to me over WhatsApp. Finally, we agreed to a fair price and made shipping plans after I issued him the money through PayPal.

As always, I agreed to pick up the shipping charges. We chose DHL France as the shipping service. Unfortunately, post-pandemic shipping prices have increased dramatically, almost double what they were previously, and some new security restrictions made this transaction section a bit more complicated. Once shipping issues were sorted out, the records arrived quickly (in less than five days).

I had some concerns about the condition of some of the vinyl, but once I started sorting through the collection, my fears were assuaged. While the stuff in it was far from “near mint” it was average VG+; there were numerous scarce titles I have never had before and may never have again.

Video Of The Insane Collection

Breakdown Of The Gems

Here is a breakdown of some select gems, and there are many insane ones, starting with…

Darkthrone – A Blaze In The Northern Sky LP 1992 White Label Test Press – Darkthrone – A Blaze In The Northern Sky LP 1992 White Label Test Press – Original copies of “A Blaze In The Northern Sky” are rare enough, but how about this test pressing? At this point, very few of these still exist, nevermind are for sale. This piece is a true rarity.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $1000 USD

Darkthrone – A Blaze In The Northern Sky LP 1992 Peaceville – VILE 28 UK – While this record has been repressed and reissued hundreds of times, the initial run by Peaceville Records was relatively small, making the first pressing of the album quite pricey.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $800 USD

Beherit – Drawing Down The Moon LP 1993 Spinefarm Records – SPI 14 – The original run of this cult-classic black/death metal masterpiece was also relatively small, making it quite pricey.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $700 USD

Hypocrisy – Osculum Obscenum LP 1993 Nuclear Blast NB 080-1  – Hypocrisy – Osculum Obscenum LP 1993 Nuclear Blast NB 080-1 – Extremely rare transparent yellow first pressing of this album was strictly limited to 1000 copies and very rare.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $700 USD

Dissection – Storm Of The Light’s Bane LP 1998 Nuclear Blast [Blue Vinyl] – A true Holy Grail if there ever was one. While an early reissue and not a first pressing of this black metal classic, this 1998 press from Nuclear Blast mailorder was limited to 500 copies and is mega-rare! Even more recent reissues of “Storm of the Lights” bane can fetch $200-$300 a week after they sell out. The first pressings now will run you about $1000.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $700 USD

Nifelheim – Nifelheim LP 1996 Necropolis Records – NR 007 – This was by far the best album from this band. Original CDs can average around $60; as you can see, the vinyl isn’t cheap either.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $600 USD

Dødheimsgard – Monumental Possession LP 1996 Malicious Records MR010 – While I am not totally familiar with this band, it doesn’t stop their records from costing an arm and a leg.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $600 USD

Beherit ‎– The Oath Of Black Blood LP 1991 Turbo Music – Beherit’s debut album was a very limited run and is almost impossible to come by.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $400 USD

Deicide – Legion LP 1992 R/C Records – RC 9192-1 – The fact that this album is fully autographed by the lineup that played on it certainly adds to the value of this one. Considering the animosity between Glen Benton and the Hoffman brothers, you will never get the four of them in a room to sign another copy like this.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $400 USD

Vader – The Ultimate Incantation LP 1992 Earache – MOSH 59 – A great album by a great band; even recent represses of this get expensive.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $400 USD

Sarcófago – I.N.R.I. LP 1987 Cogumelo Produções – COG007 – In my opinion, one of the most influential metal bands ever. Brazil’s Sarcofago has been credited by many as the inventor of grindcore and the bridge between death metal and black metal — another “Holy Grail” for sure.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $400 USD

Dismember – Like An Ever Flowing Stream LP 1991 Nuclear Blast – NB 047 – This album is an essential from the Golden Age Of Death Metal (1990-1995), and the first pressing is hard to score.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $400 USD

Amorphis – The Karelian Isthmus LP 1993 Nuclear Blast – NB 072 – Another offering from the Golden Age of Death Metal – this limited run of 1000 colored vinyl is highly sought after by collectors.

Condition VG+/VG+
Value $370 USD

Sodom – Tapping the Vein LP 1992 Steamhammer ‎– SPV 008 – You can argue that this is far from the best album by Sodom, but like many albums from the 1990s, the limited runs make it quite rare and high-dollar.

Value $350 USD

Krisiun / Viollent Hate – Curse Of The Evil One LP 1993 Dynamo Brazilie – DYN005 – This Brazilian split LP would be the first time the world would hear the brutal black/death metal attack of Krisiun and make it another “Holy Grail” album.

Massive Collection of 9000 Rare Extreme Metal Albums, CDs, and Cassettes From Ohio! Have Metal? Will travel…

Massive Collection Rare Extreme Metal Albums, CDs, and Cassettes

This month’s update took me on an adventure to Chillicothe, Ohio, where I picked up a massive collection of 2500 extreme metal LPs, 5500 CDs, and around 2000 cassettes, all in mint condition.

Here is a video of the haul once I loaded it into my place.

Sadly, this collection did not become available under the best of circumstances. The original owner of this insane collection, Scott Baxter, of the Philadelphia-based metal/hardcore band, Dare To Defy, tragically succumbed to cancer at age 55.

Here is a link to some of Dare To Defy’s music, active from the late 80s to the late 90s.

On his passing, he left his collection to a friend who was not a big metal fan. She contacted me through this site, and after a few phone calls, I decided to fly out to Chillicothe to check it out and perhaps make an offer.

I left Los Angeles on the redeye and hoped to catch some sleep on the first leg of the flight from LAX to Atlanta. But unfortunately, I was unable to fall asleep on the plane. So I arrived in Columbus and decided to power through. I picked up a U-Haul truck from a town near the airport and went to view the collection — it was as she described to me, so after a bit of negotiation, I wrote the owner a check, loaded the truck, and was on my way back by 3 PM that afternoon.

The Long Journey Home

At this point, on no sleep, I began the most white-knuckle leg of the trip: The 2000-mile-plus trek back to Los Angeles.

I only drove a few hours on the first day before stopping in Indiana. Then, after 16 hours of driving the next day, I stopped for the night in Missouri, and again after a similar length drive, I stopped in Denver.

Most miraculously, there were no serious snafus the entire trip – no running of gas, speeding tickets, or brushes with death.

Highlights From This Collection

I have yet to make it through every album in this monolithic assemblage, but I pulled out a few to feature in this first blog post and will follow up with some more in future posts.

Mortician – Hacked Up For Barbecue LP 2016 Hells Headbangers NM/NM BLUE RED – Great 90s death metal by two-man band from Yonkers, NY, that recorded with a drum machine and never toured because they were on probation. Hacked Up For Barbecue is both brutal and highly collectible.

Mortician – Re-Animated Dead Flesh LP 2016 Hells Headbangers NM GLOW IN THE DARK – Though this album is technically a reissue, the early Mortician albums never appeared on vinyl. This limited glow-in-the-dark vinyl is quite rare, collectible, and pricey.

Death Angel – The Ultra-Violence LP WHITE 2016 Metal Blade – 3984-15377-1 NM/NM – This white vinyl limited run of 100 from the OG Death Angel thrash classic is very sought after because of its low print run.

Mercyful Fate ‎– Melissa LP 1983 Megaforce Records ‎– MRI-369 EX/NM – The debut album from Mercyful Fate “Melissa” is widely regarded as one the most influential extreme metal albums of all time. To find an original copy in near-mint condition is a rare treat.

Satan – Court In The Act LP 1984 LP Metal Blade – MBR 1016 EX/EX – Though technically a reissue, this first US pressing of “Court In The Act” by the British heavy metal band Satan is very sought after.

Cryptic Slaughter – Money Talks LP 2014 Relapse – RR6547 NM [GREEN LIMITED 300] – These limited color reissues from the godfathers of grindcore not only look cool, but they are also almost worth as much as original copies of this LP.

Deicide – Deicide LP 2014 Metal Blade Records – 3984-15311-1 NM/NM [RED VINYL] – These limited red reissues of the debut album from Deicide sold out so fast they are now scarce and never sell for less than a hundred bucks!

October Rare Death Metal CD and Punk Vinyl Update

BLACK FLAG FIRST ALBUM RED COVER 1982

Continuing in a trend that seems to have started in the last few months, I have bought a lot of excellent punk rock vinyl and death metal CDs. While the two collections in the videos on this post are far from my only pick-ups in October, they are some of the more interesting.

First up, let’s do the death metal CDs.

Standout Rare United Guttural Rare Death Metal CDs

The cool thing about the CD collection pictured above is its amount of out-of-print stuff. For example, there are many titles from the now-defunct United Guttural Records, which put out a lot of great obscure goregrind, grindcore, and death metal in the 90s and early 2000s.

Rotting – Crushed CD 1998 United Guttural Records – UGR 002 – Very rare, usually sells 40-50 dollars.

Mutilated – Devirginated Genital Pulp CD 2003 Forever Underground – FU018 – Very sick cover that should make the pro-abortion freak proud. Also sells for around 40-50 dollars

Rotting – Crushed CD 1998 United Guttural Records – UGR 002 – Very sick cover. Also sells 40-50 bucks.

Other Standout CDs

Internal Bleeding – Voracious Contempt CD 1995 Pavement Music – 72445-15009-2 – Great death metal band that could have been huge, toured with Cannibal Corpse, but is a metal band that should have been bigger. This CD is worth 50-60 dollars.

Sadus – Swallowed In Black CD 1990 R/C Records – RCD 9368 – Second album from brutal thrash band Sadus is worth about 60 bucks for the first pressing on R/C records. This band was very intense and their music bordered on death metal.

Regurgitation – Tales Of Necrophilia CD 1999 Ablated Records – ABLTD002ABLTD002 – This CD has been entirely out-of-print since 1999. Hell’s Headbanger Records reissued it in 2019. Originals still go for around 50 bucks.

October Hardcore Punk Vinyl Update

October has been another strong month for buying punk rock vinyl, as witnessed in this video.

The funny thing about buying collections from the 80s Golden Age Of Punk is seeing many of the identical records repeatedly. Not only do you see the same bands over and over again, suck as Minor Threat, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedys, you see many of the same compilations, such as Punk and Disorderly, and ROQ.

Mega-Rare Collection Of 90s Black/Death Metal CDS from Sweden

This video shows a crazy rare collection of black and death metal CDs from the 90s thru 2000s that I bought from a collector in Sweden. There is a ton of crazy out-of-print stuff from labels that are now out of business in Europe. However, many of these CDs have since been reissued by Metal Blade, Napalm, Century Media, and others. You can get many of these reissues, but the originals are easily worth 20-50 dollars (sometimes less, sometimes more).

I didn’t have time to put together a complete list for this month’s blog update, but you can see all of them in the video, and I have taken some time to highlight a few of the best ones I’ve found from this collection.

Big CDs In This Collection

Monstrosity – Imperial Doom CD

Monstrosity – Imperial Doom CD 1992 Nuclear Blast – NB 055 CD [ORIGINAL PRESS] – Monstrosity was a death metal band that became the jump-off point for many death metal musicians, most famously, George “Corpsegrinder” who is currently fronting Cannibal Corpse, which is probably what makes this CD worth so much. This CD goes on eBay / Discogs for north of 100 dollars.

Mayhem: Deathcrush CD

Mayhem: Deathcrush CD 1994 Deathlike Silence – DSP Anti-Mosh 003 NORWAY – Mayhem’s debut EP. While is technically a reissue, this was the first time this album came out officially on CD. This item is heavily counterfeited and reissued. Only the first press had no barcode on the tray card.

Thornium – Dominions Of The Eclipse CD

Thornium – Dominions Of The Eclipse CD 1995 Necromantic – NGP 005 Netherlands – Recorded in 1994 this release from the Swedish black metal band Thornium is worth around 100 bucks. I’m not sure why, it just is!

Behemoth – And The Forests Dream Eternally CD

Behemoth – And The Forests Dream Eternally CD 1995 Entropy – DE 101MCD *Italy – Minialbum released very early in their career and never reissued to the mid-2000s. Song #4 “Evil and Hate” is a tribute to Bathory.

Massive 80s/90s Thrash, Death, and Black Metal Vinyl / CD Collection

Morpheus-Descends-Ritual-of-Infinity-Blue-2015-CRYPT-60

Below is a video of the thrash metal vinyl from a massive death metal LP and CD collection I just purchased from a collector in Colorado.

The original owner was a younger guy, but the entire collection consisted of 20% from the Golden Age Of Thrash Metal and 80% from the 90s peak of death metal. 95% of these albums are reissues, but a few first are pressings that include “Slowly We Rot” and “Cause Of Death” from Obituary.

Even some of the reissues can be shockingly expensive due to the 7-12 month delays in vinyl production that is now plaguing the music industry.

I have cataloged the inventory from this purchase below. If you are looking to buy any of the entries listed can do so at ThrashMetalIQ on eBay.

How To Spot A Fake Yellow Bathory LP (BMLP-666-1)

Bathory- Bathory LP 1984 Black Mark Production BMLP 666-1

The self-titled Bathory LP (Bathory – Bathory LP 1984 Black Mark Production – BMLP 666-1) with the “yellow goat” album cover is considered one of the “holy grail” scores for heavy and black metal record collectors the globe over. But, unfortunately, it is also one of the most counterfeited records out there because of its value. So let’s find out how not to get fooled into buying a fake, or if you don’t have thousands to spend — what a replica is worth.

Why Is This Album So Valuable?

The first album from Bathory is a landmark album from the metal genre. While it sounds recorded in a garage, it became the template for countless black metal bands afterward. The first thousand copies were pressed independently on Quarthon’s Black Mark Productions with a gold-colored goat on the front cover before being picked up by Combat and Under One Flag for broader distribution. The first press with a yellow goat can fetch $5,000 or some for an authentic copy.

FUN FACT: The original goat was supposed to be gold, but due do budget issues, the fledgling Black Mark Productions label had to settle for yellow.

How To Spot A Fake Bathory Album

The iconic artwork for this album is very simple. Therefore there are some very convincing knockoffs available in various markets. Listed below are the main things to be looking for:

  • Examine the dead wax or the “runout matrix” on the album. It is the engraving in the vinyl after the playing surface. The engraving in a real copy should read as follows on Side A (“Darkness”): 840905GP with BMLP 666 1 A PD-CR Pentagram image] [666 image in pyramid shape] and then on Side B will have this etching 840905GP BMLP 666 1 B PD-CR [Cross image]
  • The most prolific bootlegs came out in Europe in the mid-1990s. The most common runouts are 666-1, or you may see some copies with nothing in the dead wax at all.
  • Most of the original pressings came with a printed inner sleeve. However, these can also be faked. Also, some authentic copies may be short an inner sleeve if the original owner lost it.
  • If the album looks “too new” you should look more carefully. Remember that this album came out in 1984 and is 37 years old at this point. You should expect to see some wear.
  • If the color looks “wrong”, it is likely a fake. This is a common problem among cheap bootlegs.

Marketplace Safety

Despite how rare this album is and eBay’s policy to not allow the sale of counterfeit albums, there always seem to be 2-3 copies available for $2200-$2500 at any given time. Most likely, they are not authentic, but here is how you stay safe if you want to spend big money.

  • Contact the seller and inquire about the runout matrix. If they don’t respond or refuse to provide it, you should hard pass. You can also request they provide pictures, though they can be difficult to see.
  • Whether on Discogs or eBay, look for a reputable seller that has many reviews and a lot of items for sale — not someone who could pack up and disappear overnight.
  • If the seller does not accept returns, you should not buy from them.

Album Artwork

As I said, this iconic album artwork is quite basic. Here are some pictures from one of the common European bootleg pressings. Notice how tough it is to tell if it is fake or authentic.

How Much Is A Yellow Goat Bootleg Worth?

If you want to have a yellow goat Bathory, but don’t feel like forking out two grand, it is totally understandable. If you can get past the moral dilemma of not paying the Quarthon estate, you can get replica copies for 50 bucks, sometimes less.
