Collection of Over 2000 Rare Death / Black Metal CDs I Bought For $4600

The video below shows an example of an atypical deal I made with a guy to buy an awesome black and death metal CD collection

A seller in New York hit me up years ago, wanting to sell these CDs. Honestly, I didn’t do a great job on the offer. I offered him $4600 for this collection of what was supposed to be 2000 CDs. I should have bid higher.

We went back and forth over the price; he correctly thought it was low. After some negotiation, he told me he wanted me to go to Western Union or wire him the money. When I do business with someone, I always like to use PayPal so we can enable buyer-seller protection. It acts as an escrow between the buyer and the seller, keeping me locked into the deal while keeping the seller honest. If something goes wrong, PayPal is there to cover it. I have tried other methods to facilitate a deal like this and never have found better. Just sending someone thousands of dollars and hoping they send you what they promise is the oldest scam on the Internet.

Deal In Limbo

In limbo is where the deal sat for almost 2 years; the guy finally hit me up a few months ago and said he still wanted to sell the CDs and was willing to accept my offer. He then said he had the same issues with PayPal and could not get his account going again. I told him that if he were willing to send me the CDs, I would pay him for them if they were what he said they were. I pointed out that I have a well-respected career as someone who buys heavy metal albums and CD collections

He then sent me the CDs through media mail. They were packed OK, but were a bit dusty. The playing surfaces were all pristine; many cracked cases needed replacement. The actual count of the CDs was only 1400, not the 2000 that he thought it was. Overestimating the collection size is a common issue when buying collections; people often think they have more than they actually do.

Even with the numbers not being precisely right, this is still a great deal. $4600 was a fair price. The cost per unit totaled $3.28, which is still great. I would’ve paid even more for them now, as there were many rare and out-of-print CDs from the 1990s to the 2000s, many of which were worth up to $50, a few even more than that. I compiled a list of the best and brightest below.

Awesome Collection of 700 Rare Black/Death Metal CDs I Bought Locally In LA

OBITUARY-SLOWLY-WE-ROT-CD-1989-ORIGINAL

Below is a tour of an awesome CD collection I bought locally in LA. Unlike many metal CD collections I purchase, I didn’t do this through the mail. The local seller came to my business, I saw the CDs before buying and paid him in cash. This was much simpler than my typical out-of-state or even out-of-country transactions.

The collection consisted of almost 700 death and black Metal CDs ranging from the 1980s to current bands. The guy had great taste in music, and there was no cheesy metal in this batch. The only problem was that he initially asked for $5000 for the whole lot, which was expensive. While I could have bought them for this much, it wouldn’t have been worth my time / paying for help to list them. I told him that if he wanted that kind of cash (as opposed to PayPal), he would be best off selling them individually on eBay, and he would earn that after a year or two of work. It is also important to remember that no matter how great your CD collection is, about 40% of it will never sell.

After negotiations were completed, he confessed the second best offer was from Amoeba Records for a scant $1500. As I say on my contact page, we pay more than anyone for quality metal collections than anyone because we want Thrash Metal IQ to be the most badass metal record store on the planet.

What Was Inside This Collection

Below are some of my favorite and most valuable CDs from this collection, along with some approximate values.

Insane Collection of Mega-Rare / Obscure First Press Thrash Metal CDs

The video below is a complete walk-thru of a great collection of thrash metal CDs I bought from a widow selling them because her husband recently passed.

Unfortunately, I get too many collections this way these days. While it is always sad when a fallen metal brother passes on, it is good that their music can carry on. More importantly, I pay generously for quality metal CD collections so the family can get decent money for what they left behind.

No To The Awesome Thrash Metal

I buy collections of every metal subgenre; most I get are death metal and black metal, but I rarely run into a collection of my favorite subgenre: THRASH METAL (as you can probably guess by the name of this website). I grew up in the 1980s during the heyday of bands like Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, and Exodus. Thrash metal was king from 1985-1989 before dying a slow death in the early 90s under the weight of grunge.

The CDs in this collection consist of around 50% reissues and 50% original pressings. Many of the CDs in this collection came from some of the more obscure (to very obscure) bands that populated the later years of the thrash scene. Even many reissues are limited pressings of 1000 or less on small labels like Divebomb Records.

Highlights From This Collection

Below are some of the standout pieces from this collection.

Equinox – The Way To Go CD

Screenshot

Equinox—The Way To Go CD 1990 RCA—PD 74669 [Norway] — This release is likely a tax write-off for RCA. Many bootlegs of the CD exist; there are no reissues, and originals are exceptionally rare and very expensive.

VALUE: $150

Cyclone – Inferior To None CD

Cyclone—Inferior To None CD 1991 Justice Records—JR-CD02-90 [Belgium]—This obscure Belgian thrash metal band is beloved by hardcore thrash fans. The original vinyl pressing came out in 1990, and this 1991 press is the first pressing on CD.

VALUE: $100

Exhorder – Slaughter in the Vatican CD

Screenshot

Exhorder—Slaughter in the Vatican CD 1990 Roadrunner RO 9363-2 [Original]—This debut CD from New Orleans-based thrashers Exhoder is thrash metal done as well as it can be. The band followed this release with 1992’s “The Law” before breaking up for nearly 30 years and returning in 2020.

VALUE: $100

Forced Entry – As Above So Below CD

Screenshot

Forced Entry – As Above So Below CD 1991 Relativity – 88561-2024-2 – The second release from one of those great thrash metal bands that came too late. It is completely out of print, with no reissues, and costs an arm and a leg.

VALUE: $90

Equinox – Xerox Success CD

Screenshot

Equinox – Xerox Success CD 1992 RCA – PD 75210 [Original] – Another thrash metal band that came too late to be the next Metallica only to become another tax write-off for RCA

VALUE: $90

ZnoWhite – Act Of God CD

ZnoWhite – Act Of God CD 1988 Roadracer – RR9587 – This female-fronted band split up shortly after this album when vocalist Debbie Gunn returned to her former band Sentinal Beast.

Massive Collection of Death Metal, Goregrind, Grindcore, & Cybergrind CDs

goregrind collection

In the video below are some highlights from a collection of death metal, goregrind, pornogrind, and cyberbrind CDs I bought from a collector in Seattle. I had to cut the video short and edit it for YouTube to keep my channel from getting a strike because of the graphic nature of some of these covers.

For those unaware, goregrind is an offshoot of death metal initially pioneered by UK’s Carcass. It existed as an extreme sub-genre of death metal before breaking off into even more extreme sub-genres such as goregrind and pornogrind by bands like Meatshits, Lividity, Anal Blast, and Waco Jesus.

Collection Highlights

Here are some of the rare and valuable CDs in this collection. I decided to use the censored photos to avoid getting this blog in hot water with the powers at Google.

Lividity – Perverseverance CD

Lividity – Perverseverance CD 2018 Metal Age Productions – MAP132 [Slovakia] – Of all the bands mentioned in the post, Lividity is the only one still active today. Lividity was formed 1995 as a one-man project by Dave Kibler and later recruited members to become a “traditional” band.

Collection of Rare High-Value Black, Death & Heavy Metal CDs

Collection of Rare High-Value Black, Death & Heavy Metal CDs

Below are some highlights from a relatively small collection of CDs I bought from a private collector.

Even though this black and death metal CD collection is much smaller than the ones I usually get, I paid the guy $700 for it because a few rare/valuable CDs were included. Some of the conditions of the playing surfaces of some discs could have been better.

I am only interested in VG and up when buying metal CD collections. Many people think that “if the CD will play all the way through without skipping” means it is in very good condition, but this is not true. CDs with significant marks become worth substantially less and lose much resale value. If you want to grade your CDs, more information can be found here.

Highlights From This Collection

The entries below contain info about some of the more valuable CDs in the collection and their corresponding values.

The Black Dahlia Murder – A Cold-Blooded Epitaph CD 2002 Lovelost Records – LL01 is one of the most expensive CDs I bought in ANY collectionA Cold-Blooded Epitaph was Black Dahlia Murder’s self-released debut. Black Dawn – Blood For Satan CD 2001 Necropolis Records – NR069 has two releases. One version was on Season of Mist, and this version was on Necropolis Records. The Necropolis is the rarer of the two.

Collection of 2500 Japanese Death, Thrash & Heavy Metal CDs

Collection of 2500 Japanese Death, Thrash & Heavy Metal CDs

In the video below is a small portion of over 2500 metal CDs I just bought. Almost all are near-mint, over half are rare Japanese pressings, and many are sealed.

This remarkable collection was inherited by a daughter whose father had recently passed away. Sadly, this is not the first time I’ve bought heavy metal records and CD collections like this in my short career.

It was my understanding that the father died way too young, at the age of 60. What is remarkable about this collection is it spans the entire length of the genre, from Black Sabbath to bands that came out in the last few years.

Using PayPal and Trust

This transaction was a five-figure deal. Often, I am asked how I feel comfortable buying collections like this sight unseen and how buyers can feel comfortable working with me. I do all of these out-of-state deals through PayPal as goods and services. I pay the seller in full before their mailing. Paying upfront locks me into the agreement and assures the seller I’m a man of my word.

When you use PayPal as “goods and services,” you are allowing PayPal to act as an impartial referee. It creates a type of escrow between you and the seller. If something goes wrong, you can open a dispute inside PayPal, and they will sort it out. I have only had to do this once in hundreds of transactions. It’s good to know that 99% of people are honest.

Using PayPal insures both parties should it get lost in the mail or damaged because of improper packing or postal abuse.

PayPal sometimes holds for a few days before releasing them, but it usually does not. Fees go to the seller at 2.9%, which is quite reasonable.

Great Features In This Collection

All Japanese CDs in this collection are still factory-sealed with the OBI strip, genuinely “near mint.”Many are in SHM-CD format. SHM is a specialized audiophile format for which you need a Japanese SHM CD player, but it will normally play on a standard player.

Most of the non-import versions of the CDs are the deluxe collector versions that frequently include extra tracks, patches, and bonus tracks.

aborted global flatline cd with bonus tracks

Regardless of value, every CD in this collection is housed in plastic collector sleeves.

That is all for this blog post; I will have to spread this out among a few posts because of the size of this collection.

October Rare Death Metal CD and Punk Vinyl Update

BLACK FLAG FIRST ALBUM RED COVER 1982

Continuing in a trend that seems to have started in the last few months, I have bought a lot of excellent punk rock vinyl and death metal CDs. While the two collections in the videos on this post are far from my only pick-ups in October, they are some of the more interesting.

First up, let’s do the death metal CDs.

Standout Rare United Guttural Rare Death Metal CDs

The cool thing about the CD collection pictured above is its amount of out-of-print stuff. For example, there are many titles from the now-defunct United Guttural Records, which put out a lot of great obscure goregrind, grindcore, and death metal in the 90s and early 2000s.

Rotting – Crushed CD 1998 United Guttural Records – UGR 002 – Very rare, usually sells 40-50 dollars.

Mutilated – Devirginated Genital Pulp CD 2003 Forever Underground – FU018 – Very sick cover that should make the pro-abortion freak proud. Also sells for around 40-50 dollars

Rotting – Crushed CD 1998 United Guttural Records – UGR 002 – Very sick cover. Also sells 40-50 bucks.

Other Standout CDs

Internal Bleeding – Voracious Contempt CD 1995 Pavement Music – 72445-15009-2 – Great death metal band that could have been huge, toured with Cannibal Corpse, but is a metal band that should have been bigger. This CD is worth 50-60 dollars.

Sadus – Swallowed In Black CD 1990 R/C Records – RCD 9368 – Second album from brutal thrash band Sadus is worth about 60 bucks for the first pressing on R/C records. This band was very intense and their music bordered on death metal.

Regurgitation – Tales Of Necrophilia CD 1999 Ablated Records – ABLTD002ABLTD002 – This CD has been entirely out-of-print since 1999. Hell’s Headbanger Records reissued it in 2019. Originals still go for around 50 bucks.

October Hardcore Punk Vinyl Update

October has been another strong month for buying punk rock vinyl, as witnessed in this video.

The funny thing about buying collections from the 80s Golden Age Of Punk is seeing many of the identical records repeatedly. Not only do you see the same bands over and over again, suck as Minor Threat, Black Flag, and Dead Kennedys, you see many of the same compilations, such as Punk and Disorderly, and ROQ.

Baphomet – The Dead Shall Inherit CD 1992 Peaceville – VILE 31 CD

This is a small but valuable group of high-dollar CDs I picked up from a collector in Northern California. While this isn’t a massive collection (numbering less than 40 CDs), I buy both small and large collections — none is too big or too small. In this group of CDs, there are a lot of great rare CDs from European record labels like No Fashion Records, No Colours, and Necropolis Records that are all out-of-print. Some of the titles have never been reissued, and many others have. Regardless, the original 90s pressings are very sought after and quite expensive.

Mega-Rare Collection Of 90s Black/Death Metal CDS from Sweden

This video shows a crazy rare collection of black and death metal CDs from the 90s thru 2000s that I bought from a collector in Sweden. There is a ton of crazy out-of-print stuff from labels that are now out of business in Europe. However, many of these CDs have since been reissued by Metal Blade, Napalm, Century Media, and others. You can get many of these reissues, but the originals are easily worth 20-50 dollars (sometimes less, sometimes more).

I didn’t have time to put together a complete list for this month’s blog update, but you can see all of them in the video, and I have taken some time to highlight a few of the best ones I’ve found from this collection.

Big CDs In This Collection

Monstrosity – Imperial Doom CD

Monstrosity – Imperial Doom CD 1992 Nuclear Blast – NB 055 CD [ORIGINAL PRESS] – Monstrosity was a death metal band that became the jump-off point for many death metal musicians, most famously, George “Corpsegrinder” who is currently fronting Cannibal Corpse, which is probably what makes this CD worth so much. This CD goes on eBay / Discogs for north of 100 dollars.

Mayhem: Deathcrush CD

Mayhem: Deathcrush CD 1994 Deathlike Silence – DSP Anti-Mosh 003 NORWAY – Mayhem’s debut EP. While is technically a reissue, this was the first time this album came out officially on CD. This item is heavily counterfeited and reissued. Only the first press had no barcode on the tray card.

Thornium – Dominions Of The Eclipse CD

Thornium – Dominions Of The Eclipse CD 1995 Necromantic – NGP 005 Netherlands – Recorded in 1994 this release from the Swedish black metal band Thornium is worth around 100 bucks. I’m not sure why, it just is!

The Top 10 Most Expensive Metal CDs Of 2020 We’ve Encountered

top 10 metal cds most expensive

This list is compiled from CDs acquired while buying metal CD collections in the year 2020. It is by no means a comprehensive list of every metal CD out there; these are just ones we have first-hand experience with. The values we had assigned are based on what we have sold them for and are not an aggregate.

1. Urn ‎– 666 Megatons CD 2006 No Sign Of Life ‎– NSOL001

1. Urn ‎– 666 Megatons CD 2006 No Sign Of Life ‎– NSOL001

Urn ‎– 666 Megatons CD 2006 No Sign Of Life ‎– NSOL00 – the special edition from this Finish thrash/black metal band that includes the DVD is RARE. Urn was a cool proto-Black Metal sound similar to “Show NoMercy” era Slayer – the full edition, which includes a live DVD, is almost impossible to find and goes for north of 100 bucks on a regular basis.

Sold 10/1 $159.00

2. The Black ‎– The Priest Of Satan CD 1994 Necropolis Records ‎NR 003

2. The Black ‎– The Priest Of Satan CD 1994 Necropolis Records ‎NR 003

The Black ‎– The Priest Of Satan CD 1994 Necropolis Records ‎NR 003 – This CD has been re-issued several times, including more recently on Osmose Productions – if you can find the original on Necropolis Records, it can be worth a pretty penny.

Sold 9/11 $99.95

3. Swans ‎– Swans Are Dead CD 1998 Young God Records ‎– YG03

3. Swans ‎– Swans Are Dead CD 1998 Young God Records ‎– YG03

Swans ‎– Swans Are Dead CD 1998 Young God Records ‎– YG03 – Although The Swans are not technically a metal band, it is quite common to see their brand of gothic rock turning up in the collections we buy. The original pressing of their CDs is very hard to come by, and reissues aren’t that common either, making almost every CD in their catalog quite valuable.

Sold 8/8 – $79.95

4. Ingested – The Surreption CD 2012 Siege of Amida Records

4. Ingested - The Surreption CD 2012 Siege of Amida Records $99.95

Ingested – The Surreption CD 2012 Siege of Amida Records – I will be honest: when I first saw this one, I thought it might be a fluke, but upon some investigation, copies of those are really scarce and sell for north of $100 on Discogs on a monthly basis. It is also worth noting that Ingested sounds like a $99 per CD band; they play some ridiculously tight technical death metal and are one of my new favorites.

Sold 12/29 – $99.95

5. Xibalba – Ah Dzam Poop Ek CD 2005 Guttural Records ‎– CDGR002

5. Xibalba – Ah Dzam Poop Ek CD 2005 Guttural Records ‎– CDGR002

Xibalba – Ah Dzam Poop Ek CD 2005 Guttural Records ‎– CDGR002 Mexico – the original pricing from Mexico only lists eight tracks; there are later reissues, but if you can find the first one, it is quite valuable.

Sold 7/11 – $74.99

6. Baphomet – Death In The Beginning CD 2012 Sevared Records ‎– SR-216 $74.95

6. Baphomet – Death In The Beginning CD 2012 Sevared Records ‎– SR-216 $74.95

Baphomet – Death In The Beginning CD 2012 Sevared Records ‎– SR-216 – Includes the advance tape from 1990. Many songs were subsequently renamed, including the “Boiled in Blood” live 7″ as a bonus.

Sold 9/10 – $74.95

7. Devourment ‎– Molesting The Decapitated CD 1999 United Guttural UGR 005

7. Devourment ‎– Molesting The Decapitated CD 1999 United Guttural UGR 005

Devourment ‎– Molesting The Decapitated CD 1999 United Guttural UGR 005 – I was actually surprised that this one didn’t sell for more; this is the original version of this death metal classic from this brutal Texas-based outfit. Beware, there are many bootlegs floating around of this release.

Sold 8/9 $74.95

8. Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten/Pierced from Within CD 2003 Roadrunner

8. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten/Pierced from Within CD 2003 Roadrunner

Suffocation – Effigy of the Forgotten/Pierced from Within 2x CD 2003 Roadrunner (2 From The Vault Series) – almost all of the CDs from Roadrunner’s discontinued “2 From The Vault” series fetch a pretty penny. Some other big ones to look for are Obituary and Exhorder.

Sold 7/7 – $74.95

9. Ancient Wisdom – For Snow Covered The Northland CD 1996 Avantgarde Music

9. Ancient Wisdom - For Snow Covered The Northland CD 1996 Avantgarde Music

Ancient Wisdom – For Snow Covered The Northland CD 1996 Avantgarde Music – This CD from an obscure but extremely talented Italian progressive black metal band is extremely hard to find, not to mention the music is amazing. These guys should’ve been much bigger!

Sold 6/6/ – $69.95

10. Amebix – No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings CD 2008 Revolver USA

10. Amebix - No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings CD 2008 Revolver USA

Amebix – No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings CD [Digipak] 2008 Revolver USA – Although this one might fall more into the crust punk genre, Ambix is still quite popular among the metal crown. This gym was in wider distribution on Alternative Tentacles, but if you can find the original, it’s worth quite a bit.

SOLD 11/11 $66.95
